Abstract
|
Recently, digital libraries have increasingly developed
and they play an important role in library and information
science field. Through digital libraries, the user can search
and retrieve information and content that was hidden before.
Last years, along with libraries development, there are
important steps in digital libraries evaluation.
This master thesis' main goral is to implement evaluation
on "The European Library". This survey requested librarians
and archrivists to evaluate the "The European Library",
which compromise an effort for offering access to European national libraries.
The survey results revealed important issues and
weaknesses of "The European Library".
These results will help both, "The European Library"
and the research, in improving digital libraries evaluation. |

Abstract
|
Technology Acceptance Model is a quite
widespread model that predicts and explains the use of information
systems. This Thesis makes an effort to apply this model in library
information systems, specifically in library web pages, with the addition
of external variables that concern with the degree of users familiarization
to web applications, their interaction with the system and the quality
of the provided information. For this purpose, a questionnaire was
prepared and an experiment was held with postgraduate students of
Department of Archival and Library Sciences. Despite the small and
special sample, Technology Acceptance Model appears to be a tool which
can correspond to the interpretation and prediction of information
services use. |

Abstract
|
In this study it is presented a model for the interoperability among
different metadata standards and more specific between MPEG-7
and SCORM. This model concerns first of all the semantic
mapping between the different metadata of these standards.
The MPEG-7 provides a standardized set of technologies for
describing multimedia content. SCORM is a collection of
specifications for developing, organizing and delivering instructional
content. However, the developing of these standards according to
the specific requirements of their communities may cause problems
of interoperability between audiovisual digital libraries and eLearning
implementations. So, it is necessary the development of a model that
will allow the use of semantic descriptions of audiovisual content
objects and/or segments that reside on a digital library in order to
support the creation of reusable learning objects that may be used
in the assembly of personalized courses. The semantic mapping
between MPEG-7 & LOM and MPEG-7 & SCORM cp standards is
presented through an ontology (SCORM_MPEG7_Ontology),
that captures the common elements and attributes of these metadata
standards. With this ontology it is represented the detailed mappings
of the elements and attributes and their relations of the metadata
standards. For the implementation of this task it has been used GraphOnto.

Abstract
|
We are living in a society which is known as "information society".
This qualification implies the importance of information for modern
people and their civilization. The management and utilization of
information, supported by the use of computers and telecommunication
networks. The development that has taken place in these
technological fields, has rendered the management and utilization
of information much more improved, providing the capability of
access to all users that dispose the appropriate equipment and
simultaneously, satisfying their information needs. In the present
thesis is being made an effort to utilize these technologies in order
to manage manuscripts, which are part of the personal
correspondence of Nikos Kitsikis. Through a specific application,
the manuscripts have been organized in a digital collection and thus
a digital library has been created, providing information to all interested
users, irrelevantly of the natural distance that separates them from the documents.

Abstract
|
One of the most significant components of the "Information Society"
are all kinds of libraries, documentation centers and informational
services. One characteristic tool and model that libraries use in
order to describe and organize their collections and information in
general, is the Dublin Core Template. The Dublin Core is a metadata
template for the description of the sources and it also covers not only
bibliographic data, but broader data categories as well. Because of the
rapidly increasing amount of information and owing to the complexity
and the specialization of the new data, it was necessary to create
the Application profiles. The Application profiles combine and mix
different metadata schemas with Dublin Core Metadata Initiative.
This aims at importing discriptive elements, that may not be included in
a metadata schema, for a better and more complete description of new
and more specialized data. In the present thesis, we present and note
down the research that has been done, concerning the already existing
application profiles and those that have been developing for the libraries.
But mainly, there is an endeavor to fing application profiles that cover
sectors and services of a library, regarding to everything else but the book.

Abstract
|
In recent years the use of digital media and related technologies has
led to the enormous increase of digital material in transit. This fact as
well as the noted incapability of handling this amount of data without
the use of information technology, resulted in the creation of digital libraries.
The latter employ tools and methods from the information technology domain,
especially the so-called open-source software, which has evolved into
a de-facto and strategic solution. This project work presents and analyses
ten (10) open-source software solutions for digital libraries, in an attempt
to provide the reader with objective comparative data and to guide him,
to a reasonable extent, in choosing the right product for his/her intended use.

Abstract
|
The integration of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
has changed significantly the field of education. Due to the adoption of the
new technologies, e-learning has been emerged and developed. As a result,
distance learning has transformed and new possibilities have appeared. It is
remarkable that distance learning became and considered as a scout of the
new era in education and contributed to the quality of education. Higher
institutions, colleges and universities play an important role in offering education
and consequently they reacted by designing and delivering distance learning courses.
Simultaneously, libraries tend to adapt their services in order to meet different needs of
various user groups. In the present thesis we are trying to present the new
educational environment and how has it changed because of the open and distance education.
Main subject of the thesis is not only to present the policies used by academic libraries in Europe,
but also to record the general European educational policy context. In addition, it is attempted to
present the Greek case and afterwards the role of the library in the new educational environment.
Libraries have to cope with new challenges and they have to fulfill new and various needs.

Abstract
|
In our days the world is defined by quick structural changes and developments
in the fields of economics, technology and society. These changes reform our
society in what is called today society or the economy of knowledge. In this
way it is made necessary more so than less for individuals to acquire knowledge
and qualifications or skills, whose duration but their variety also will allow them
to adapt in these changes. Simultaneously the political and educational framework
changes and adapts according to the commands of globalization and the knowledge
of the global economy. For the creation of effective systems of lifelong education
the different countries are moving towards some very important changes so much
so in the administration as well as in the funding of the educational systems and its
formation. At the same time libraries, nowadays, by using these new technologies
of information and communication are reorganized and change their functioning role.
Also their role in life-long learning is a matter which is causing a lot of talk. In the
bibliography it is mainly shown as a provider of access and supporter of knowledge,
but their also exist situations in which the libraries manage or the library itself
becomes the creator of subject matter towards life-long study. The research part of
this project is to register through political text and positioning the role of the library
in lifelong learning, mainly in countries, which are considered pioneers and
innovators in matters of the library but in Greece as well. There is made a registration
of the meanings which are related with life-long learning and the current role of the library
in life-long learning is examined with an emphasis in new technologies such as e-learning.
Finally an attempt is made at imprinting the trends of evolution of life-long learning and the
role of the library in this field, while conclusions and suggestions are brought forward.

Friendly use of ontologies / thesauri from information systems / digital libraries

Abstract
|
The continuous incorporation of digital type of material in the collections of
the libraries as well as the ongoing advances in new technologies have brought
about the need for the libraries to use post-coordinated systems, mainly thesauri.
However, a significant problem exists in connection with the exploitation of the full
potential that thesauri could provide nowadays. The majority of the Integrated Library Systems (ILS),
which have become an integral part of helping libraries manage their collections,
have not incorporated thesaurus supporting subsystems; furthermore, the remaining
minority that includes such subsystems can not provide satisfactory results.
On the other hand, although the Thesaurus Management Systems (TMS) provide
great facilities for both the input of data and information retrieval, they can only be
used as independent systems. The solution to this problem seems to be the finding
of a modus that would permit TMS and ILS to operate integrated. The present essay
provides a list of "proposals - requirements" which are necessary for the creation
of the specifications required for a properly created integration. This list reflects a
purely librarian's point of view. For the construction of the list in question, all kinds
of users as well as indexers were taken in to consideration.

Detection of duplicate bibliographic resources or records in electronic descriptions

Abstract
|
In the last 25 years, as the size and the number of bibliographic databases
continuously increase, libraries have to deal with the pressing issue of
duplicate bibliographic records. Databases are rapidly enriched and the
situation is aggravated since along with the number of bibliographic records
the number of users increases as well. In individual databases, the problem
becomes more obvious when data are prepared for migration to a more
technologically advanced system. Usually, however, the problem comes
to light when union catalogs are developed and records from multiple
independent systems are merged in one system or cooperative cataloging
systems are being developed in a network environment. The paper examines
and categorizes all possible approaches for the identification of duplicate
records according to the applied procedures. We report how algorithms are
used to detect duplicate records, and their efficiency as well. Also, we
examine the processes of clustering equivalent or related manifestations
of bibliographic records. Our analysis concludes that the application of
algorithms to detect duplicate records constitutes an integrated process or
a two-step consecutive process. We note that the ultimate goal of all the
above processes is the deletion, merging or the temporary and virtual
consolidation of duplicate records. Finally, we examine issues regarding the
operation of real and virtual union catalogs and the protocol's Z39.50
services to cope with the problem of duplicate records.

Abstract
|
The integration of the new Information and Communication technologies in
the work performed by the libraries, the lack of knowledge on questions of
personal data protection, the complexity of the modern automated systems
adopted by libraries, the vertical increase in the quantities of information
stored by these systems, as well as the increasing interest of actors, mostly
alien to the library environment, in researching and exploiting library archives,
constitute potential threats against the privacy and individual rights of the
receivers of library services. In the context of the current research, the aim is
to highlight the problems in protecting privacy against personal data collection
and processing in the frame of libraries and information services. The research
contains a general overview of the relevant regulating and self-regulating efforts
on international and European level and explores the best ways of managing
the conflicting rights and legal interests in the environment of the libraries,
through the study of the methods and practices developed in order to respond
to the problems of personal data protection in the environment of the internet
and the information society. Given the fact that there have been no previous
studies on the issue of personal data protection in the environment of Greek
libraries, the present contribution includes the results of research conducted on
a representative sample, attempting to record the views of librarians and
information professionals on the questions of privacy and personal data protection.
Finally, the risks from personal data processing in information services are analyzed
and a draft professional code of ethics is proposed. This proposal takes into
consideration the Greek legislation, the needs and particularities of libraries, as
well as the most suitable existing information technologies for the protection of privacy.

Abstract
|
The objective of the work is to demonstrate some of the multiple possibilities
of encoding and representation that Topic Maps present (ISO 13250:2002 Topic Maps)
via the modelling knowledge organisation systems such as thesauri.
The objective is achieved via the description of models and the comparison
of the syntactic model of Topic Maps standard and the guidelines regarding
the construction of thesauri (ISO 2788 and ISO 5964). The work also
includes the implementation of drawn conclusions in the encoding of a
sample of a monolingual thesaurus with use of Topic Maps syntax defined
in the XML Topic Maps specification (XTM 1.0). Finally, we present a
sample export of the application in RDF syntax along with a synopsis of
the discussion regarding the relation of Topic Maps and RDF and the
potential of Topic Maps to cooperate with one of the most dynamic
constituent element of the Semantic Web. Topic Maps can be used
with positive results for the modelling of thesauri because they materialise
an abstract subject metadata representational model incorporating into
a single object (topic) the subjects, their characteristics and their relations
with other subjects found in a thesaurus. Therefore, it enables a thesaurus
to exploit all the available syntactic possibilities in order to acquire a notation
that will represent all its semantic content with completeness.
